GENWI announced that it has been selected as a candidate for Red Herring’s 2012 Top 100 Global award, a prestigious recognition honoring the year’s most audacious and far reaching private technology companies and entrepreneurs from across the globe.

The Red Herring editorial team selected the companies demonstrating the most innovative technologies and business models originating from over 1000 companies from over 40 nations. These companies, representing past Red Herring Asia, Europe and North America awards, are judged on a range of qualitative and quantitative metrics, including but not limited to, technology innovation, financial performance, growth criterion, management’s execution standards, potential globalization of the strategy and market share improvement.

“Technology companies are becoming the bright spot in the economic outlook based on their increasing role within macro-economic environments,” stated Alex Vieux, Chairman of Red Herring. “2012 has confirmed the sector’s vibrant activity and its resilience to widespread economic problems. An unprecedented number of entrepreneurs are attempting to jump ahead of the competition and aspire to make a difference. Breakthroughs obsolete each other faster than ever before. GENWI has performed exceptionally in its field and strongly deserves to be singled out as one of the Red Herring Global Finalists. At this stage, we are left with the daunting task to select the best qualified companies for the 2012 Top 100 Global Award.”

The Finalists are invited to present their winning strategies at the Red Herring Global forum in Los Angeles, November 27-29 2012. The Top 100 winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony on November 29 at the event.

Keep your fingers and toes crossed! We certainly are.

Here’s a little sneak peak from our company outing last Thursday. The night was filled with fun, laughter, pizza, and blood thirsty competition. While some had their own bowling shoes, others should have brought their wives to bowl for them. The spirits were high but the stakes were even higher; the two highest scoring team members received a nice bottle of Chardonnay while the lowest scoring team member received a gift certificate to go bowling/practice. At GENWI we love to treat our team members to fun outings like this to keep the morale up and to bond with one another. If you would like to be a part of the family, please do not hesitate to apply online on our careers page. We are especially looking for highly qualified and talented engineers who are good at bowling, preferably.

In a recent interview with TDA Group, PJ Gurumohan, Co-Founder and CEO of GENWI, discusses how to optimize content for HD tablet devices.

“Bandwidth and adaptability are the primary constraints for publishers and marketers who want to provide audiences with rich HD content,” Gurumohan says. “And this frightens some people who are concerned that delivery will be complex. But it doesn’t have to be. Understanding basic mobile and tablet publishing concepts can go a long way in making content work on HD devices.”

I came across this article on Forbes.com discussing how the mobile market is the catalyst for possibilities in the new generation. Mobile devices have evolved so much from just being used as a simple telephone. Mobile has taken on all forms of communication; not only are people looking to get information quickly, but companies are wanting to give out information to meet that demand. Mobile devices became the medium for this information to be passed through via internet, apps, etc. This article outlines how mobile will soon become the only channel for information and companies will have to either jump on the bandwagon or become obsolete. GENWI believes in the three main points that Mark Fidelman makes in this article: engage, integrate, and measure. To read the full article, click here.

Red Herring is a global media company which brings together investors, high profile companies, startups, and business people into one forum. Each year they give out a Red Herring award given to companies who are projected to grow exponentially. It is a celebration of accomplishments and innovation from around the globe uniting all the business heavy hitters under one roof from CEOs, venture capital firms, to founders of major companies and firms. Applicants for this award gothrough a grueling 3-step process that dig deep into the very core of each company to weed out the most promising of ventures.  Just yesterday, our very own PJ Gurumohan was featured in an article written on Mobile Marketer on how publishers will be able to survive with the inception of mobile tablets. PJ spoke specifically on the importance of an engaging app and what that can do for a publishing house’s revenue.

“In the publishing world, high CPMs are critical, and downloading apps expands the subscriber rate and therefore drives higher ad revenue,” said PJ Gurumohan, cofounder/CEO of GENWI, Los Altos, CA.

“Having said that, publishers need to think about cultivating engagement before they can monetize an app,” he said.

“Publishers are beginning to understand that creating engaging experiences on tablets represents one of the biggest opportunities that they have had since the invention of the printing press with the opportunity to reach their readership and cultivate new and engaging experiences.”

Just yesterday our very own Amanda Van Nuys, VP of Marketing, released an eye opening article regarding the importance of a bond between tablets and content marketers. On a day to day basis marketers deal with pamphlets, social networking, flyers, brochures, powerpoints, videos, blogs, etc. and it would seem so simple and easy to incorporate all that into an app. However, the trick is to make that app engaging and functional for the reader. Using a tablet over a smartphone and tangible literature is the perfect way to create a brochure sized mobile marketing tool that is effective and alluring. For example, the Home Depot app contains videos of how-to’s and demos, social media links, puchase capabilities almost to make it feel like a less wasteful, well thought out, and simpler interior design magazine. Content marketers should take this as a call to action and start transitioning into what the actual customers are using.

PJ Gurumohan, our Co-Founder and CEO, discusses the tablet imperative for publishers.

As the buzz around the new iPad launch continues, both traditional and online publishers are “caught between the gravitational pull of the legacy tradition and the need to chart a faster digital course.” That was a key finding in a recent Pew Research Center study on the state of the publishing industry.

That “pull” was highlighted by Paul Rossi, the Managing Director and Executive Vice President of the Americas for The Economist at a recent digital publishing conference. Asked by the moderator, “What keeps you up at night?” he answered, “What worries me is the flurry of excitement over an iPad giveaway and there are a pile of The Economist magazines outside on the table.”

But in the recent Pew Research Center study, the outlook of publishers is troubling. Executives were hesitant to risk change due to “cultural inertia,” which makes adapting quickly to new technology advancements difficult. “Some of those we talked to seem frustrated and even uncertain about how to proceed,” said Tom Rosenstiel, Director of the project. “But we also found signs that, if you can break out of old cultural patterns, there is another way.” The question is, are publishers ready to explore the new territory of tablets?
